Flu Season is Upon Us....
Don't forget to schedule an
appointment for a flu shot.

A federal panel recommended Wednesday that all children get an annual flu shot, dramatically expanding the pool of people who are urged to ward off the contagious respiratory illness -- and possibly paving the way for a universal flu shot recommendation.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which makes recommendations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, expanded the group of children who should get annual flu shots to include healthy children ages 5-18. Previously, the recommendation included only those 6 months to age 5.

Type 2 diabetes can be managed with proper nutrition, regular exercise, weight loss, frequent blood glucose monitoring, and medications as necessary. Even a 5% reduction in weight can improve the health of many people with type 2 diabetes by lowering their blood sugar levels. An estimated 9 out of 10 people with diabetes know that proper weight management would help them control their condition, yet many lack access to a personalized program.

Programs that offer personalized meal and fitness plans are equally as important as general education about the complexities of diabetes care. One third of the people with Type 2 diabetes over the age of 40 are not successfully managing their diabetes. Affordable, customized care is essential for those with diabetes who are trying to lose weight.

In an effort to encourage successful diabetes management, Abbott's Ross Products Division has developed Diabetes Control for Life, a free web-based program to help people with diabetes lose weight and better control their blood sugar. The program focuses on participant’s needs and readiness to change eating habits and lifestyle, and provides articles and emails to encourage and educate participants, as well as instant messaging with registered dietitians.

Programs like these can empower participants to better control their diabetes for life.
